a HOT day on set

19 06 2010

I spent my week working with muses, nymphs and woodland creatures. This gorgeous young lady was one of the very talented dancers who donned this crazy outfit and this long, hot wig for her role. I am embarrassed that her name escapes me because she was a precious, sweet young lady who I saw for five days in a row. Most of those days, I put her wig on but alas, my memory is not as sharp as it once was in the area of remembering a name. Much better with faces.

making a movie in the heat of the day….

in a local park……

with smoke makers to give it ambience.

Did I mention the heat index was 110 degrees?

Well, it was. If you look to the back of the photo, where the trees are, you can see where the girls in white are. Their job on this fine day was to run, leap, dance and frolic… on a steamy hot, smokey set while wearing long wigs… AND act like they were having the best time of their lives. And, they did it beautifully.

The movie is called Bolden and it is due to come out sometime in 2011. It is taken from the true story of the man named Buddy Bolden who created Jazz music in the early 1900’s. It will be a visual and listening extravaganza. I am delighted to have been a part of it.

I truly do love what I get to do for a living.

Organized Chaos

20 01 2010

If you peeked into the Ministry Out Reach room at Rock church on a Tuesday night, you might get a bit scared! Chatter about recipes, patterns, web pages and sewing projects fill the room as skeins of yarn get made into useful articles of clothing. The group keeps getting bigger and the ideas are just getting better each time we meet. To the untrained onlooker, I am sure we look like a hen party, just a-yakking and a-crafting but there is much more than meets the eye going on in this room. Ministry is happening inside the seeming chaos. These creative women are reaching out in love to those in need of warm clothes, accessories, encouraging words in greeting cards, baby clothes and healing prayer shawls. Some of us are making things to share with family members and friends. We are as different as night and day and yet there is a common thread that runs through all of us. We like to make things and we like to have fun while we are doing it.

Last night, we had two more women join the group and you would have thought we have all been crafting together for years. The laughter and the camaraderie is as healing and encouraging as the crafting. There is no pressure to HAVE to be there each week, or even to HAVE to be there for the whole two hours since we can complete our crafts on our own time at home as well as work on them when we meet.

Some members forgot to bring their projects with them last night but they still came to share ideas and work on a different craft for the evening. One of our members was having a pretty horrible day but she pushed herself to come anyway and ended up laughing… a lot… and learning more about her craft. A couple of women came in about a half hour after we started last night and didn’t seem to miss a beat. We even had a visitor pop in to chat with someone. I love the freedom we have.

At the end of the night we had six scarves and three hats ( the fruit of two weeks of labor) ready to be given to the Soap Box closet. One prayer shawl will get mailed out next week to my sister Barbara. She has breast cancer and will have a mastectomy on Thursday. We prayed over all the items and we prayed for protection and rapid healing for Barbara.

I am so blessed to be part of this group of amazing women. Thank you all for what you bring to the group each week.

Trail of Tears Emmy submissions!

I absolutely love what I get to do for a living!!! This is a picture of Carla Rae and Wes Studi in costume for the Trail of Tears. I did Wes hair and we aged him through 3 periods in his life. This was his young look. My co-worker Vanessa did Ms Carla Rae Holland’s hair in this 1800 style. The scene was a dinner party of wealthy land owners. The costumes, make-up and hair departments collaborated beautifully together. It is such joy to work with such a good and generous crew.

We have been submitted for an Emmy award for our work. I am proud of each department that was represented. It was truly awesome to be part of this project. I hope we all get to sit in the Emmy’s and cheer each other on.

Creative Saturday

1 02 2009

I love having a studio in my house. It is a blast to have my friends over and to do their hair. We laugh, pray, sing and beautify over here. My friends are some of my favorite folks to do hair for. Most of them sit in the chair and say, just do what you want. Now, that is trust.

Lisa came by yesterday. She is getting married to her sweet-heart in June and we have been talking and planning her wedding “do” for a couple of months now. Her folks were visiting my studio on the day that her fiance proposed so I was one of the first to know!! That was very cool. She tracked her folks to my house and drove here to show them the ring right away. We all squealed and hugged and shared the joy with this special couple.
Lisa is a blast. She is sassy and stylish and she is not concerned with what anyone thinks about her fashion choices. In my opinion, she always looks great. She had a few pictures of hair colors and styles with her yesterday. We picked over them and collaborated on hair colors. We were both quite satisfied with these results. I cannot take credit for the blue. They are clip ins.

Today, I rest. We had a great time in church this morning. Ed and I went out to lunch. PT’s Grille makes the best hamburgers and french fries!!! I ate real slow so I could savor each bite. Now, I am going to snuggle on the couch with a new book and a cup of tea. Ciao.
