Eddie-isms

27 09 2008

Whenever he thinks I am being just a tad grumpy:

“Sometimes I wake up Grumpy… sometimes I let her sleep.”

Ed’s answer to “What brought you to NC?”

I tied a snow shovel to the roof of the car and drove south. When someone asked me what that thing on top of my car is, I stopped.”

Today, we went out to lunch together and on the way home we decided to stop at the jewelers to have my diamond ring fixed. This is my engagement ring and it is the first diamond I ever owned. Ed and I shopped for it some 27 years ago when we were just starting out together. Of course, it is sentimental. The prongs were a little loose and catching hair when I work so our intention was to have the prongs replaced. HOWEVER, I started looking at different settings and found one that really caught my eye. My diamond fit perfectly in this setting and looks so classy to me that we bought it. If you know me at all, you know that I love my bling. This is one area where the flashy Italian taste comes out in me.

We waited for the diamond to be reset into the new ring and when it was finished, our sales lady (can you say happy woman?) brought it out and handed it to Ed. He looked at it and agreed that it was beautiful then he handed it to me. I stretched my left hand out to him and waited. And waited. I waved my left hand around in front of him and asked him if he would marry me all over again. He said, “I already married you twice”, referring to our 15th anniversary when we renewed our vows. Then he tried to put the ring IN my hand. The romantic moment was lost on him. I finally just came out with it. “Here is your chance to put my engagement ring on again Bucko. Don’t blow this.”

Ah yes, wedded bliss. He dutifully placed the diamond on my finger and now we are officially into our 27th year of marriage. It is a good thing that I am crazy about this man. A better thing that I know he is crazy about me.

slam ball

24 09 2008

I have had my first introduction to Slamball this week. Think of basket ball being played on Olympic trampolines. Actually, they are Australian trampolines and designed to give some major altitude as you can see in the photo. Sweaty men jumping high and slamming a basket ball into the hoop. Then, intermittently running, dribbling and jumping down to the other hoop and slam dunking there. Yep, pretty darn exciting.

Just thought you might like to see that.

Rock and a nugget

Rock Church

Rock Church

From a Friday night rock concert to Sunday morning at Rock Church!! It was a strange morning for me. I was still so tired and groggy when my alarm went off that I slept for another hour and missed practice. I am not sure that we have any policy that says you can’t participate on stage if you miss morning practice but I opted to sit out. It is the first time in a couple of years that I sat in the congregation and actually got to worship on the floor. This is what I saw from the crowd as our worship team tore it up. Suddenly, my mind turned to a new friend of mine who I have been inviting to come to  Rock Church. She is very reluctant to come to any church because of previous wounds she has received from church goers. This woman is smart, talented and, in my opinion, seeking. A thought came to me to do something I have never done before in church. I called her from my cell phone and told her I just wanted her to hear this song. Then I held the phone while the worship team played and I sang my guts out. I got back on the phone, told her I was thinking of her and praying for her and I hung up.

I am not advocating folks to start making their personal calls from church but I know, without a shadow of a doubt that NO ONE from Rock Church would be upset in the least about THAT phone call during service. We would all be thrilled to see this young lady come to church any time.

As God would have it, Pastor Bryan spoke about loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. I am so glad that people never gave up on inviting me to church because one day I actually came just to shut them up. Surpise of all surprises, I met my Saviour at that church service and my life was never the same.

Here is my nugget for the day: A spiritual relationship with God is the most personal and intimate relationship there can be.

USO show

20 09 2008

Good Gracious! It is the weekend again!

This is like the lost weekend for me. On Friday, (was that only yesterday?) I went to Camp Lejune to work on One Tree Hill. The production of OTH hosted a USO concert for the Marines there. Three bands played – Angels and Airways, Enation and Kate Vogel Band. One of the actresses on the show, Bethany Joy Galeotti, has a lovely voice too. She and her friend, Amber, also sang a couple of songs. Approximately 3,000 Marines and their friends and family came to the base to enjoy the free outdoor concert.

This photo was just the warm up. The concert did not start until it got dark.

Many folks had their pictures taken with some of the cast members and some of the bands. I was very happy to have played just a small part in honoring our USMC. The concert was a big hit!

My friend Julie is a little older than me. Back in the day, we attended concerts of Ike and Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Jethro Tull and Led Zeppelin just to name a few. We were standing back stage and looking out at the audience and the festivities  when she said, out loud, the exact thing that I was thinking at that moment. “Oh look, funnel cakes!” In case there was any doubt, we were the two old ladies at a rock concert! Two old, ADD ladies as a matter of fact.

After the two hour concert, the company began filming some scenes for the show. I did not arrive home until 4AM this morning!

And, YES. I did eat a whole funnel cake all by myself. I felt gross after that.

Hair and singing

19 09 2008

I am pretty excited about a project coming up. The story takes place in 1941. I just love the hairstyles and make up and wardrobe from that era.  The first step in a project like this is to do the research. I have studied some fabulous pictures of hairstyles from the 1940s. This is just one of my favorites. I will try to show you some pictures of my work when we finish this project.

The first film I ever worked on was a story that took place in 1939. An acquaintance of mine was working as a casting person. She asked me if I would like to work as an extra in a feature film. The title of the film is Radio land Murders. It is a comedy that had some pretty impressive people involved in it. The executive producer was George Lucas. It was a box office flop but God had a plan that I never would have dreamed of.

Due to my hair styling background I was able to do my own hair in the required finger waves. The hair stylists on the show loved it because it meant one less hair style they had to create. I was fascinated by the beautiful work they were doing and I hung around them, watching and admiring, every chance I got. I learned how to execute the rolls, curls and waves of the period.

After about a month, two of the stylists got hired on another feature film which meant they were leaving this show. When they told head of the hair department, she asked if they had a recommendation for a replacement. Both girls told her about me. She hired me.

As a result of that job, I was admitted into the Make Up Artists and Hair Stylists Union. I finished the show with her. The work was not easy because of the sheer numbers of heads that needed to be styled every day, but I worked hard to learn what needed to be done. The hours were absolutely insane! I worked 71 hours one week. It was exhausting and exhilarating all at once. The department head, Michelle Johnson, became a friend. She hired me on a TV series the following year and I have worked a few other projects with her over the years.

When we moved to North Carolina Ed and I thought that God was moving us into a full time music ministry. wrong. For the longest time I questioned God about this. Singing and telling people about the love and mercy of Jesus Christ was my very life.

Each time I questioned God, He responded by asking me a question.

“Will you go where I lead you?”

“Yes Lord, but, are you sure this is where You want me??”

“Even if it is not where you want to go?”

My answer then and now is, “Yes Lord.”

God is so good to me. I love being a hair stylist AND I still get to sing about the love and mercy of my Savior, Jesus Christ, at Rock Church in Wilmington.

Mystery mushrooms

17 09 2008
What the...

What the...

What in the world is trying to take over my garden??

The round, white objects in the fore ground open up and sprout these crazy looking mushrooms. Once the mushrooms sprout, they stink and attract flies from the 4 corners of the earth. I am serious! I can smell this musty, moldy stench from the driveway as soon as I open my car door. Has anyone out there seen anything like this before? We got a nasty batch of mulch because I dug out about 30 of the round “eggs” the other day and today there are another 30 out there. They remind me of turtle eggs. The outer covering is almost leathery and when I was digging them up, I tore through it and it leaked a sticky fluid.

This is like a science project gone bad. Maybe aliens mistook my garden for a hatchery. I would call in the Men In Black to investigate but I am afraid they would “flashy thingy” me and then my memory would be even worse than it is now.

Leave me a comment if you dare. 😉
